Since the launch of Aerodrums 2 last March, we offer two instrument models.
The most important differences are:
- Aerodrums 2 is a self contained instrument while Aerodrums 1 requires a computer
- You can play Aerodrums 2 in a very bright room and even outside in sunshine. You can’t with Aerodrums 1

Aerodrums 2 improves on Aerodrums 1 in too many other aspects to list here. From the drumstick markers (smaller, detachable), to tracking volume (bigger, allowing larger drum sets). Aerodrums 1 remains a great instrument and is more affordable.
Here are the key differences in more detail:
- Aerodrums 1 uses visible light and a commodity sensor to track your drumsticks, whereas Aerodrums 2 uses infrared light and a custom sensor.
- Concretely this means that Aerodrums 1 shines a light on you that can appear bright. Aerodrums 2 doesn’t. More importantly with Aerodrums 1 you need to be able to limit daylight in the room where you play. Whereas you can play outdoors in bright sunshine with Aerodrums 2.
- Aerodrums 1 requires a Windows or Mac PC to do the motion tracking. Aerodrums 2 does it itself.
- Concretely this means you can plug your headphones/amplifier straight into Aerodrums 2 and play right out of the box. Aerodrums 1 on the other hand requires plugging the sensor and light into your PC (both via USB), and configuring audio settings for best performance.
