Midi trigger for Koala Sampler / USB-C Connection

Post by Go4Sail » Thu Mar 19, 2026 2:45 pm

Hello everyone,
after numerous attempts to connect the Aerodrums 2 to my smartphone and trigger my own samples in the Koala app, I realized that I do need a bit of help after all. So far, I’ve only managed to get MIDI control messages to arrive in Koala once. Unfortunately, it’s not working at the moment, and I’d like to know about your experiences connecting the AD2 to a smartphone via a USB‑C cable.
My cable is OTG‑capable and has so‑called e‑marker chips, which should actually support hosting.

I’m happy about any tips!

PS:
For the time being, I’m using my Arturia MiniFuse 2 to access the MIDI data via the host function. This works remarkably well, although it would be nicer if the smartphone could connect directly to the AD2 control unit. Triggering and playing back (and controlling) the beats is already quite feasible with this workaround.

It should work fine provided you use a reliable data cable (e.g. not one intended only for charging). I would suggest searching for a free MIDI monitor app and trying it on your phone to see if you can see the MIDI data coming across. The one I have used on Android is called "MIDI Scope". If this works then you at least know that your phone is able to receive the MIDI data.

You might also want to check your phone settings - I have developer mode enabled on my phone but it gives me options to override how USB data is handled, including being able to tell it that the data is MIDI. It should not be necessary but it might fix the issue you're having, especially if you saw that it worked once before.
