Silent Djembe

Post by Ringowig » Wed Jan 27, 2021 10:22 am

Hi..Here’s a fun experiment I’ve recently had with making a ‘silent Djembe ‘ utilising the spare reflector balls that are provided with the Aerodrums kit.

The idea works just as well with sticks but I created finger controllers from 2 lengths of Velcro tape and 2 self adhesive double-sided tape pads.

I recorded my 12” Djembe with 20-30 velocity layers each hand, and arranged 3 ‘zones’ like this..

Here’s a sound demo of my 1st test drive..

And here’s with a backing track..

Obviously it’s difficult to replicate all the various sounds and nuances that are possible with such a natural instrument, but it’s fun being able to have a silent Djembe :D

Cheers!

For the longest time myself and Yann had talked about experimenting with this idea of using Aerodrums for hand percussion. It's great to finally see it in action and working so well!

Thanks Richard!...I’ve just finished a SilentPad practice pad as well..I’d just like to thank Wolfgang on the forum here for the original inspiration behind this with his ‘Aeropad’ idea a year or 2 ago..

Cheers!
