Have you considered using sensors instead ?

Hi Richard,
Have seen freedrum ?
That guy is using sensors to detect drumming.
But that system seems to be really bad.
Have you considered using positioning sensors instead of a light based system ?
There can be gyroscopes on the sticks and feet.
Also some king of spatial detection sensors to detect where you're hitting, something like gps but local. Not sure if that makes sense, but you should look into using accelerometers, gyroscopes and such sensors to detect drum playing. It would make aerodrums robust and definitely va new instrument playable in all lighting conditions.
