First Test of Aerodrums2 with the Quest 3S in Concert

Post by Wolfgang » Thu Mar 20, 2025 11:25 am

The app for the Quest 3/3S was recently released, and I couldn't resist trying it out live. It was the first time I'd played like this with other musicians.

How was the resonance of the crowd?

Any advice for prepare the Quest 3 and calibrating before the concert start?

I've been playing Aerodrums live since 2017, and I've never had the impression that anyone in the audience was disappointed to see me playing without drums. Rather, the opposite is the case. There were always a lot of questions about how that could be possible. This time it was different. Apparently there were three or four people who complained about the drummer afterwards. However, I don't know them and I don't know what they personally think of VR.

Unfortunately there is not much to prepare, you have to recalibrate every time you put on the Quest. And when you take a break, I recommend closing the Aerodrums app. Don't leave it running when you put the Quest in standby mode. This can have unexpected effects.

I use the Aerodrums hotspot to automatically connect the Quest to it. I then focus the camera while the app is starting. This way, the drums already appear in the right direction. When calibrating, I place the rotating circle over the camera and then correct it if the arrow is not pointing in the direction of the camera.

Next come height and distance. Place your left drumstick on the centre of the snare and set the distance and height by approaching a value close to 0. I try to find this point by moving my stick on the snare. I find this more practical to find out in which direction I need to move the corresponding slider. After a while, this can go very quickly.

If you want to use the Quest with Aerodrums seriously, I recommend investing in a good Head Strap. For your comfort and battery autonomy. I was never able to play with the Quest for more than 2 hours before I bought a KKCOBVR Q3 PRO. It is equipped with a 10000mAh hot-swappable battery, which also balances the weight of the headset and there is no longer a problem with battery life.

Another special feature is that you can completely remove the face cover and bring the lenses very close to your eyes, which then gives you a much wider FOV. And nothing presses on your face. I have removed the face cover and always use my Quest this way.

You can also flip the headset up like a visor, which is very handy when I'm not playing, and I think it's the only head strap that can do that.
