Oculus Rift sighted

Post by Navet Farci » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:25 pm

Hi,

I just saw this video of Aerodrums at NAMM 2016 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_6tzmcG_1Y

In it you demo Aerodrums with a Rift DK2, which is very exciting.
As an owner of a DK2 myself, and soon to be owner of an Aerodrums kit (it will be delivered tomorrow, I can't wait !), I have a couple of questions.

- is it still the same version of Aerodrums, or is something different regarding tracking ?
- how well does the position of the virtual sticks match the real ones ? Is it close enough to accept it as "our real hands" ?
- can you customize the kit or is the VR version limited to a fixed setup ?
- can you share anything about the advancement of the project and the quality of the experience so far ?

If it is a convincing VR experience and something that you can release in the near future, that just made my day !

Thanks in advance for any information that you can share.

Hi, to answer your questions:

- It's the same version of Aerodrums.
- The position of the virtual sticks matches the real ones closely; their orientation can deviate at times but this isn't very noticeable when playing.
- Your custom Aerodrums kit will be mirrored in the 3D display as you would expect.
- The experience of drumming in VR is as compelling as you might imagine and feels very comfortable given that you're seated when drumming and there is no locomotion (i.e. no motion sickness).

The version of the Aerodrums software with 3D/VR support is not yet released but yes, it currently uses the 0.8 runtime and will be kept up to date with Oculus runtime updates.

Thanks a lot for the answers Richard.
Will it be included in an update to the current software, or is it more like an expansion to buy separately ?

As a long time VR enthusiast and hobby musician I'm really excited about this possibility. I would love to beta test that VR software if you are ready for testers. I only just ordered my aerodrums, but I've been using the oculus rift DK2 for a long time, and I'm a software developer by profession so I should be able to help out with decent error reports. Perhaps open a new thread when / if you do a wider beta test and post in this thread if you remember.
That would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Oh and thanks for making this a free update.

We're not at that point yet but if we decide we need some outside testers before the release we'll let you know. Thanks.
