How to convert your Vsti to samples to use them in Aerodrums

Post by Wolfgang » Mon Feb 26, 2018 8:29 pm

Just to say that about one week ago I didn’t know alot about sampling, but stumbling on a little, but promising tool last week I wanted to give it a try. After a lot of reading I’ve set up a working procedure and converted successfully two complete kits from Addictive Drums 1 to Aerodrums. It’s not a “one click and let it go” action, it takes a lot of time and handwork, but hearing the AD1-kits directly in Aerodrums is absolutely fantastic.

In short what I’ve done is this:
1 create midi-files for each instrument/zone with one sound at different volumes
2 record each midi-file in a vsthost and a chosen drum-kit to a wav-file
3 convert the wav-files to .dsnd-files
4 split the .dsnd-files to samples
5 import the samples in Aerodrums

For creating the midi-files, converting the recorded wave-file and splitting the dsnd-files to samples I’m using the DsoundTool, a program for producing and editing dsnd files. Dsnd files, the format of the 2BOX “Open Sound System”, are wave files that contain the sounds played by the Drumit Five drumming system. DSoundTool is shareware you can use free for 30 days, after you buy the right to use the license for a single user by donating an amount of your own choice to either:
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF"), e.g. http://www.msf.org.uk in the UK, http://www.aerzte-ohne-grenzen.de in Germany, etc. WWF, http://www.panda.org/

http://www.shortestpath.se/dsoundtool/index.html

They have also examples for AcuDrums, BFD2 and Superior Drummer.

In the next days I will see with a friend (who owns Addictive 2) if my procedure is applicable with his version.

If someone wants my already created and apparently working midi-files with my modified Aerodrums midi-map for Addictive Drums 1, send me a message. I’m happy to share.

.
LEGAL ASPECTS
.

By the way, I’m in no way encouraging software piracy! But in my personal view, when I’ve bought a sound library for “producing” my music, I would have a problem if someone could tell me how I have to produce. Pretty silly to make a big deal about whether the samples are being played from within a computer or from within a sampler or drum module.

Officially there is not much information about this.

Toontrack:
It is illegal to share dsnd files created using Superior Drummer to other users. In fact it is probably even not allowed to create such dsnd files at all, but Toontrack allows this as long as you use them only in your own 2box module. At least that is my interpretation, in http://www.2box-forum.com/index.php/topic,970.0.html you can find more detailed information. But please ask Toontrack directly if you feel unsure.

FXPansion:
On http://www.2box-forum.com/resources/ there is some information from FXPansion on using BFD2 samples in 2box modules. Here you can read ("us" = FXPansion): "You can legally import BFD (1+2+expansions) samples from your own BFD2 in to your own 2box brain - however you cannot legally distribute them, even to others that own BFD2 and a 2box brain. If you or somebody else does make some 2box kits from BFD2 samples, would be good if you can send them to us - we can then redistribute them to other 2box + BFD2 owners on request."

I think they are all observing what’s happening, and if everyone plays the game not to share his samples on the internet, this could even open up a new market for them selling their libraries to 2Box/Aerodrums users.

I would like to get a copy of this from you, Wolfgang! I tried to contact you, but I think the info on your profile was blank. Maybe I don't know what I am doing.
